About the event
Kohlrosing is known to be a Scandinavian decorative technique involving inlaying color into incisions in wood with finely-ground powders such as charcoal, cinnamon, coffee, or others.
This technique dates from the time of the Vikings or earlier, and was used to decorate wooden spoons and other wooden objects, a few of which survive from those ancient times.
In this workshop, we will introduce and practice kohlrosing on prepared birch wood, laying out a simple design with pencil and ruler, incising the design on the wood with knives, and burnishing in the powder and oil to leave behind a lovely design.
This workshop will provide participants with a basic understanding of the technique. This is close-up work, and if you use reading glasses please bring them along. All tools and materials supplied.
Want a drink after class? The best bar in town is just down the road! A drink ticket to Babe's Bar is included with registration.
About Andre Souligney:
Using freshly harvested green wood and traditional hand-tools, I make asymmetrical spoons and other kitchen utensils, bowls, milking stools and woodland work benches, shaving horses, chopping blocks, mallets, tool handles, and other interesting things. I love to learn, experiment, share and expand the joy of the craft with others I meet along the way. My partner Heather and I are raising our growing daughters here in the hills of Vermont, and I cherish the time, interest, and support each of them afford me to pursue my spoonderlust…
